Abstract
This chapter examines contrasting views on responses to future population ageing from several perspectives. These perspectives include social framing and related prescriptions for ‘solving the ageing problem’ as a fiscal problem, as viewed by government, experts, and think tanks. It reviews evidence on economic and social directions central to ageing issues at what may be a critical turning point in Australia’s history and in the prospects for future generations. This is followed by a review of constructive international approaches to population ageing before turning to focal issues for Australia in addressing opportunities and challenges of individual and societal ageing. It concludes by critically assessing recent experiences and near-term prospects for Australian leadership on ageing—both within and beyond government—including actions by individuals, employers, and the broader community.
