Anesthesia and Perioperative Care for Organ Transplantation

Abstract

The field of renal transplantation has undergone major advancements with regard to organ selection, preservation, and allocation; patient selection; and short- and long-term immunosuppressive management. However, despite these strides, the procedure of renal allograft implantation has remained relatively unchanged for the past 40 years. Cadaveric whole-organ pancreas transplantation is done as part of a simultaneous pancreas/kidney transplant, after kidney transplantation (pancreas after previous successful cadaveric or living-donor renal transplant), or as a sole procedure.
