The Impact of Climate Change on Agricultural Crops

Plant Genomics and Climate Change

Abstract

Changes in climate due to human activity have potential to profoundly effect humanity during the coming decades. An increased frequency of drought and heatwaves would directly impact human health, while a continuing rise in sea levels is predicted to flood entire island nations, and threaten extensive coastal infrastructure elsewhere. Furthermore, with food security looming as one of the major challenges of the twenty-first century, the potential for climate change to constrain food supply is of utmost concern. A range of mechanisms via which climate and the associated accumulation of atmospheric pollutants may influence crop production have been studied. This chapter provides an overview of current research on climate change in the context of agricultural crops.
