Catheter Based Valve and Aortic Surgery

Abstract

For nonsurgical and surgically high risk patients with valvular heart disease, transcatheter valve repair and replacement has become a rapidly growing option. Initially, aortic valve stenosis was considered for transcatheter treatment because of easy access, simple anatomy, straightforward physiology, and most important with calcific stenosis a secure landing spot for transcatheter valve anchorage. However, with transcatheter valve technology improving rapidly, nonsurgical and high-risk surgical patients with mitral regurgitation now have the option to have a transcatheter mitral valve repair.
