Abstract

Differentiated thyroid cancer most commonly exists in euthyroid individuals, who present with a thyroid mass or who have a structural thyroidal abnormality detected on a radiologic study. In contrast to this typical presentation, there are several groups of patients who have thyroid cancer associated with other clinical circumstances and therefore may require special attention. This chapter discusses these special situations and includes patients with thyroid cancer and (1) concomitant thyrotoxicosis, (2) renal failure on dialysis, and (3) tumor origin in an ectopic site. The general principles underlying the diagnosis and treatment of thyroid cancer in these subgroups are comparable to cancer presenting in the more typical cases, but these special circumstances require additional considerations.
