Abstract
Although educators and prevention scientists are grounded in different disciplines and paradigms, both groups of professionals have a common interest in the growth and development of young people. While educators have a focus on the academic success of their students, there is a recognition that risk factors such as alcohol, tobacco or other drug use, mental health issues, an abusive home environment, peer pressure and others can contribute to academic difficulties and influence later success in life. By working together, educators can better understand the influence of risk factors and minimize their effect on academic performance, and prevention scientists can provide evidence-based programs and strategies that will result in the development of a positive school climate conducive to academic success.
