Abstract

This chapter addresses the topic of well-being among primary and secondary school students in Slovakia. The chapter begins with a presentation of theoretical assumptions and research results about the quality of life and well-being of children and adolescents within Slovakia and the Czech Republic dating from 1989 when such research began. The present research study was carried out in primary and secondary schools in Kosice, the second largest city in Slovakia, as part of the Promoting Psychological Well-Being Globally (PPWBG) study. Participants were 58 boys and girls aged 6–17 years. The characteristics of the social role for a student, friend, citizen, parent, and a teacher were predominantly described by adjectives referring to behavior in the youngest age groups and referring to personality traits in older age groups. The children were able to identify their own emotions and the emotions of others, particularly happiness, sadness, anger, fear, and confusion; they had skills to cope with these emotions. Age and gender differences were identified with respect to the sources of stress which trigger individual emotions. Despite age differences in sources of support, the most significant supporting people regardless of age were parents. Negative emotions (most commonly anger, sadness, or feeling “bad”) as reactions to stressful relationships were described regardless of age or gender. The findings of the present study can be used in programs supporting well-being in schools as well as posing new questions for further research in the context of this country.
