Abstract

Traumatic brain injury is managed using both surgical and nonsurgical methods. This chapter describes the current and evolving surgical and nonsurgical treatments used for various traumatic brain injuries. Surgical treatments range from standard craniotomies, commonly used to treat subdural and epidural hematomas, to endovascular treatments for carotid and vertebral artery pathology. Nonsurgical treatments include intracranial pressure monitoring and medical managements that may be used to supplement or in lieu of surgical treatments depending on the type of neurotrauma. In this chapter, we outline surgical and nonsurgical management of epidural hematoma, subdural hematoma, traumatic parenchymal lesions, depressed cranial fracture, penetrating intracranial injury, diffuse axonal injury, carotid and vertebral artery dissection, and blast injury.
