Abstract

This chapter builds on concepts that were previously presented in the more design-oriented chapters by highlighting the importance of establishing a crosswalk between design and operation. The duties of landfill operation staff for sustainable landfills are presented, including a comparison with typical duties of operations staff at traditional landfills. Elements that a landfill operations plans should contain to accommodate sustainable landfilling procedures are presented; important operator responsibilities include monitoring and data collection (e.g., tracking the liquids balance), infrastructure inspections and record keeping. Recommendations for using effective system performance monitoring metrics are presented at the end of the chapter.
