Abstract
Habit Reversal Therapy (HRT) is the psychosocial treatment of choice for tic disorders. Across five randomized controlled trials HRT has proven superior to other active comparison treatments (e.g., supportive psychotherapy, Exposure and Response Prevention), and it has been deemed a “well-established treatment” according to the criteria outlined by the American Psychological Association. Comprehensive Behavioral Intervention for Tics (CBIT) is the most recent and well-defined variant of HRT. In this chapter we detail the theory and techniques that comprise CBIT including assessment, awareness training, competing response training, and function-based interventions. We conclude the chapter with a case example illustrating the use of these techniques in the clinic.
