Abstract

The definition, classification, and incidence of parastomal hernia can vary based on the clinical, radiographic, or intraoperative findings. It can be viewed as an almost inevitable complication of stoma formation. Most risk factors are nonmodifiable. Diagnosis is based on history, physical exam, and imaging findings. Complications can range from mild discomfort to bowel perforation warranting emergent laparotomy. Open and laparoscopic repairs with mesh are preferable to nonmesh repairs. Prophylactic mesh placed at the time of stoma creation has been shown to decrease parastomal hernia rates.
