The Management of Radiation Cystitis

  • Chapter
  • First Online:
Radiation Therapy for Pelvic Malignancy and its Consequences

Abstract

Radiation cystitis can present early or months to years (late) after receiving pelvic radiation. While early radiation cystitis is usually self-limited, late radiation cystitis can be more challenging to manage and lead to greater patient morbidity. This chapter aims to discuss the diagnosis, pathophysiology, intravesical therapies, and systemic treatments for radiation-induced cystitis. Furthermore, detailed descriptions are provided for endoscopic and percutaneous management options, hyperbaric oxygen therapy, and cystectomy and urinary diversion for refractory cases of hemorrhagic radiation cystitis. Finally, novel treatment strategies and future research areas will be discussed.
