Abstract
The implementation of smart energy management systems will rely on the integration of several technologies, including: sensing and actuating devices, smart appliances, some kind of controller, and the communication network. In the future, it is envisaged that a variety of sensing devices will be deployed within buildings in order to monitor the occupants and environment in which appliances are operating. Smart appliances will use the data provided by these sensing devices to adjust their operation mode, and hence manage their energy usage according to changes in the environment they are operating in. In certain situations, appliances will not be able to perform the necessary changes in isolation, and will need the intervention of actuators.
