Abstract

Obesity has increased as a major public health concern over the last several decades, and so has the focus on identifying the risk factors and lifestyle habits that contribute to this epidemic. As a whole, the American population repeatedly falls short on meeting minimum activity recommendations. Optimal physical activity levels help to combat and prevent obesity and many of its comorbidities. The health benefits of exercise not only include weight loss and weight maintenance but also go well beyond just weight management. This chapter provides guidance regarding the basic definitions of exercise, the benefits of physical activity, the current recommendations for physical activity, and the “how to” for writing an exercise prescription.
