Abstract

Tobacco use, a human-created epidemic, kills one third of the people who use it. Across the world, smoking is the most common form of tobacco use. In several countries, both smoking as well as smokeless tobacco is used among all age groups. In 2002, 50 % of the people killed from tobacco use were from developing countries. In the next two decades, unless urgent action is taken, the number might double and 70 % of deaths are likely be from developing countries. Tobacco-related deaths will be more than eight million in 2030 which is more than the total number of deaths from malaria, maternal and major childhood conditions, and tuberculosis combined.
