Abstract

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a frequently occurring metabolic disease in the western world and is a major cause of loss of vision. In diabetic patients, the lack of adequate control over circulating glucose concentrations affects different structures of the visual system, including the crystalline lens. To obtain better cataract treatment results in diabetics, it is necessary to adopt a multidisciplinary approach which combines adequate metabolic control, diabetic retinopathy (DR) treatment, and the appropriate surgical technique.

Recently introduced anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) drugs used in conjunction with laser retinal photocoagulation and a minimally invasive cataract surgical technique have significantly improved the prognosis of diabetic cataract patients.
