Studies on the Cornea and Lens

Abstract

Corneal degenerations are not hereditary corneal disorders secondary to local or general diseases or related to age. A late onset with deposition of material, tissue thinning, and vascularization characterize them. The main age-related forms are bilateral and are represented by arcus senilis, limbal girdle, endothelial guttae, and crocodile shagreen. Degenerations with tissue thinning comprise Terrien’s marginal degeneration and corneal dellen. The group characterized by material deposition is composed by Salzmann nodular degeneration, band keratopathy, lipid keratopathy, spheroidal keratopathy, drug-induced keratopathy, and pigment deposition forms. Some of them might induce severe visual impairment while the others are rather innocuous. The correct diagnosis and follow up are mandatory for the appropriate therapy and visual function restoration and maintenance.
