Abstract
Although the first successful full thickness corneal transplant was performed in 1905, it was not until 1998 that major advances in the field began to occur. During the 93 years between these events, there were attempts made to advance to field and these consisted of different suturing techniques and advances in eye banking technology; however, the surgical procedure remained largely unchanged. The full thickness transplant is immensely successful, but it is fraught with potential complications. The lamellar techniques described in 1998 and modified since that time has led to an easier, safer, and overall better surgical outcomes. This chapter describes the evolution of the lamellar endothelial corneal transplant in detail.
