Abstract
This section details the embryologic development of the kidneys, structures that arise from sequential primordia and ascend from the pelvis, explaining the development of pelvic kidneys and horseshoe kidneys as well as anomalies in the renal blood supply. The anatomical relationships of the renal vessels and ureters are outlined, as they pertain to common surgical approaches. Injuries to the bladder and ureters, as well as the methods of repair, are discussed. The anatomy and function of the urinary sphincter mechanism is explained.
