Abstract
Taking pretty pictures is great. But there are a lot of other things that we as amateur astronomers and astrophotographers can do, both for our own enjoyment and to contribute to the science of astronomy. If you are into solar system/planetary observing, look into The Planetary Society (http://www.planetary.org/). If your interests lie in the deep space realms, look into the American Association of Variable star observers (http://www.aavso.org/) or CitizenSky (http://citizensky.org). All of these organizations promote citizen scientist projects and welcome observations by amateur astronomers.
