Abstract

Rectal prolapse repairs are plagued, in part, by high recurrence rates despite several well-described operations. Patients should be aware that while the prolapse will resolve with operative therapy, functional results often continue to be problematic. Traditional open repairs add to the potential morbidity with wound healing issues. Minimally invasive approaches, with and without mesh, offer similar outcomes, with the additional advantage of smaller incisions, shorter length of stay, and lower wound complications. In this chapter, we will describe the technical aspects of a laparoscopic mobilization and rectopexy, as well as highlight various options including resection and mesh placement.
