Abstract

Preoperative preparation is minimal in most cases and centers on educating the patient and providing proper anesthesia. The patient should be counseled that there will be scar but reassurance should be given that everything possible will be done to optimize it. There may be further revision surgery. Repair with adequate lighting and magnification (loupes) with proper instrumentation should not be compromised. Critical landmarks are realigned. These include natural curves such as the free margin of the ala and the lateral margins of the columella. The helical rim and antihelix are natural curves of the ear. Hairlines such as the brow, anterior forehead hairline, and sideburns are realigned.
