Advances in Image-Guided Urologic Surgery

Abstract

Trainees in urology must overcome many obstacles in order to achieve the skills required to become a competent and credentialed urologist. As urology has advanced in sophistication, the methods of teaching have also adapted and changed. The traditional Halstedian motto of see one, do one, teach one is no longer used on its own to teach trainees but is being augmented with tools such as simulation. Although simulation has been available in forms such as inanimate object manipulation and animal wet labs, only recently have advances in computing allowed for realistic virtual reality simulation to be employed. Computer-assisted simulators are currently available for endourology, laparoscopic surgery, and robotic-assisted surgery. This chapter will discuss the published literature regarding validity of each of the various simulators and the relevance of simulators in each of subspecialty of urology and highlight the importance of simulator use in the education of future trainees.
