Abstract
Hysteroscopic sterilization was introduced in 2002 and has become an essential office gynecologic procedure for women who no longer desire fertility. Initially, two approved sterilization systems were introduced to market but only is currently in widespread use: the Essure™ Permanent Birth Control System. This procedure consists of two metal–polymer microinserts which are hysteroscopically placed to transverse the uterotubal junction and allow for tissue in-growth and tubal occlusion over time. The procedure has been extensively studied and has been easily adapted to the office surgery practice. It has superior effectiveness, is relatively pain-free and with few complications. Patient evaluation and preparation as well as procedural technique is reviewed as well as tips on assessing the post-procedure hysterosalpingogram are discussed. In-office hysteroscopic sterilization is a safe, straightforward procedure which is ideally suited for a gynecologic office practice.
