Abstract

The young healer soon learns, as described by Maimonides in the eleventh century, that medical practice involves much more than technical skill. It involves touching, listening, and offering hope when remedies fail. Good doctoring often involves revealing the physician’s human side, and, in the words of Francis Weld Peabody, “The secret of the care of the patient is in caring for the patient.”
