Essentials of Vascular Surgery for the General Surgeon

Abstract

The spectrum of aortic pathology ranges from acute life-threatening conditions that require immediate intervention to chronic abnormalities that call for medical therapy and long-term surveillance. Most general surgeons will encounter patients with abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAA), aortic dissections, and traumatic aortic injuries. This chapter will review the treatment considerations for these common aortic conditions so that general surgeons can provide effective initial management and treatment or facilitate more specialized care when appropriate.
