Abstract
Financial abuse of the elderly is increasing. Existing literature classifies financial abuse as one of the major forms of exploitation of older adults. This chapter reviews the risks for abuse in the victim, perpetrator, and the environment. The typical victim is identified as white, elderly, frail, and cognitively impaired. Additional risks reviewed for victims include: mental illness, substance abuse, social support, and fear. Perpetrator risks include financial or housing dependence, social stress, substance abuse, and mental illness. Environmental risks include attentiveness and living situations. The chapter reviews each factor in depth and suggests a team-based approach to proactively identify those most vulnerable to exploitation.
