Structured and Semistructured Clinical Interviews Available for Use Among African American Clients: Cultural Considerations in the Diagnostic Interview Process

Guide to Psychological Assessment with African Americans

Abstract

Structured and semistructured interviews offer an empirically supported platform for diagnostic decision making. Available structured and semistructured diagnostic interviews are reviewed focusing on those interviews most commonly used and their applications in the African American (AA) population. The Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV-TR Axis I Disorders (SCID), Diagnostic Interview Schedule (DIS), Composite International Diagnostic Interview (CIDI), Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview (MINI), Clinician Administered PTSD Scale for DSM-IV (CAPS), and other empirically supported frequently used interviews are highlighted. Cultural considerations when interviewing AAs, including cultural mistrust, racial identity, discrimination and stereotypes, language, and diagnostic bias are also addressed. There is documented diagnostic bias for AAs when compared to Caucasians in the USA. Structured and semistructured interviews can be useful tools in reducing diagnostic bias resulting from cultural factors. Currently there is a paucity of research related to the validity and reliability of the reviewed measures specifically with AA clients. Implications and recommendations are also discussed.
