Abstract
This section introduces the major indications for esophagectomy including esophageal carcinoma, and benign etiologies such as caustic injury and esophageal perforation. The evaluation, staging, and treatment of squamous cell carcinoma and adenocarcinoma of the esophagus are described in detail. The technique of both Ivor-Lewis and transhiatal esophagectomy is discussed, as are the most common postoperative complications of these operations, including anastomotic leak. A classic case of esophageal cancer is described and questions are provided for review.
