Abstract

This section introduces the topic of peripheral arterial disease and the evaluation of the vascular patient. The major indications for surgical intervention are discussed, including disabling claudication, rest pain, ischemic ulcers, and gangrene. The technique of arterial bypass is described, using the femoropopliteal bypass as a representative example. Also discussed are the most common postoperative complications of this procedure. A classic case of peripheral arterial disease is described and questions are provided for review.
