Abstract

This section introduces the physiology of primary, secondary, and tertiary hyperparathyroidism and describes the major indications for parathyroidectomy. The technique of both a conventional and minimally invasive parathyroidectomy is detailed, including a description of intraoperative parathyroid hormone monitoring. Also discussed are the most common postoperative complications of parathyroidectomy. A classic case of parathyroid adenoma is described and questions are provided for review.
