Abstract
This section introduces the reader to the diagnosis and evaluation of patients with acute appendicitis. Appendicitis during pregnancy is given special mention. Unusual indications for appendectomy such as carcinoid tumor are also discussed. The technique of both laparoscopic and open appendectomy is detailed, as are common complications. A classic case of appendicitis is described, and questions are provided for review.
