Assessing Sexual Dysfunction in Asian Clients

  • Chapter
  • First Online:
Guide to Psychological Assessment with Asians

Abstract

The purpose of this chapter is to promote the assessment of sexual dysfunction in Asian individuals by offering the best options that are currently available despite the scarcity of instruments that have been validated in this population. To this end, a brief overview of the DSM-IV diagnostic criteria for the sexual dysfunctions is first reviewed. The literature on prevalence estimates on sexual dysfunctions among Asian individuals is then presented, followed by cultural issues that may arise in the assessment of sexual dysfunction in this population, including the role of sex guilt and sexual communication in Asian cultures. The chapter concludes with a description of the clinical interview, which represents the most culturally adaptable tool at the clinician’s disposal, and the best available self-report instruments for assessing sexual dysfunction in this population.
