Cultural Competent Care for Seniors in Disasters

Abstract

As the nation gets more diverse and disasters continue to occur cultural competent care is central to eliminate health disparities and improve quality of care and services in times of disasters. In order for health care professionals engaged in emergency preparedness planning and disaster response to effectively communicate and protect the community, understanding the culture, values, and norms of a community is essential. By providing cultural competent care health care professionals can ensure that the individuals and/or community are receiving quality emergency services. A disaster plan that is developed with involvement from minorities and vulnerable populations is a first step in eliminating health disparities among underrepresented populations. The older adult is an identified population that requires specialized services in a disaster. Strategies and interventions for seniors in each phase of the disaster cycle are provided.
