Abstract
The most critical sections in a manual are those in which the reader is expected to follow a series of instructions (steps) in order to be able to carry out a task.
Writing procedures involves:
-
identifying the major tasks and separating them into subtasks
-
writing a series of steps that walk the user through each subtask (often presented as a list of bullets)
-
not having two steps in the same sentence or bullet
-
only giving the reader information at the exact moment that they need it (this is known as ‘just in time’ information)
