Abstract
This chapter describes homeopaths who are not easily classified in the other chapters. Dio(cletian) Lewis, inventor of the beanbag, campaigned for temperance, women’s rights, and physical fitness: he developed a system of gymnastics that was adopted throughout the United States and that has influenced teaching in schools. He designed physical fitness instruction for trainee teachers. Lewis was motivated by a fear that American society was becoming unfit due to an increasingly sedentary way of life.
Matthias Roth, a Hungarian homeopath practicing in London, introduced Swedish massage to British medicine. Soon after, the Taylor brothers (one of whom was a homeopath) introduced Swedish massage to the United States. Ira Remsen achieved fame as a chemist and as president of Johns Hopkins University. Carl Fischer became a distinguished pediatrician. Charles Eastman was the first Native American Indian to graduate from a US medical school and devoted most of his life to bettering the conditions of his race; he was one of the first to interpret the values and history of Native American culture to western society from an Indian point of view. Edward Cronin Lowe became well known for his immunization studies in influenza and for early pioneer work with respect to blood transfusion.
