Constipation

Abstract

Chronic constipation, whether identified based on patient or provider perspective or Rome criteria, is a common problem in the United States. It is distinguished from irritable bowel syndrome with constipation as abdominal pain in relation to the altered bowel habits is not a primary symptom. This chapter reviews the epidemiology and pathophysiology of chronic constipation and its subtypes, identifies salient features in its diagnosis and evaluation, and informs the reader of current and future management options.
