Abstract

Hamstring injuries are among the most common lower extremity injuries in athletes and can result in significant disability and lost productivity on the athletic field of play. Current standards of care include traditional modalities such as rest and physical therapy to return the athlete back to peak performance. Despite these efforts, many athletes are at risk for repetitive injury and persistent symptoms. Enhancing the biologic response to enable faster recovery with a diminished risk of recurrence has led to an interest in growth factors and platelet-rich plasma therapy for the treatment of these injuries. Several commercial preparations are available with variable efficacy based on platelet concentration, white blood cell concentration, and method of procurement. While many studies have demonstrated beneficial effects with regard to muscle repair and clinical improvement, further basic science and clinical studies are necessary to determine the true benefits of this therapy as it relates to current clinical practice.
