Handbook of Adolescent Behavioral Problems

Abstract

This chapter reviews the research evidence regarding the treatment and preventions of behavior problems in adolescents with ADHD. The chapter begins by providing an overview of ADHD, its incidence, and what research has found to date about its causes. The chapter next reviews individual, family, and social and community factors that influence risk and resiliency for teens with ADHD. The chapter then provides an overview of evidence-based prevention and intervention programs for adolescents with ADHD. Although numerous programs and practices are possibly efficacious or promising, no programs have yet been adequately investigated for this population. However, a number of interventions have begun to demonstrate their efficacy and are reviewed as possible treatments which might work for adolescents with ADHD. Finally, the chapter concludes with recommendations for best practice when intervening to resolve and prevent behavior problems in adolescents with ADHD based on the evidence currently available.
