Abstract

Anxiety disorders represent one of the most common forms of psychopathology in adolescence yet often go unrecognized or misdiagnosed. In this chapter we provide an overview of the major anxiety disorders in youth. The chapter includes a discussion of risk and protective factors that are grounded in biology, genetics, individual differences, and familial and social contexts. Prevention and treatment approaches are reviewed according to the level of evidence supporting their effectiveness. Cognitive-behavioral approaches are highlighted given the substantial body of evidence supporting their effectiveness at this time. Promising new approaches to treatment are also discussed and include modularization, computer-assisted therapy, bibliotherapy, condensed and intensive adaptations of cognitive-behavioral therapy, and a stepped care approach to treatment. Recommendations for best practices in the prevention and treatment of anxiety disorders in youth are then specified. The chapter concludes by noting that the identification of anxious youth and accessibility to treatment are two of the most pressing needs to be addressed in the future, especially for youth living in disadvantaged and resource-scarce communities.
