Handbook of Adolescent Behavioral Problems

Abstract

Despite the fact that adolescence marks the beginning of a critical period for early intervention for many individuals with schizophrenia and other psychotic spectrum disorders, adolescent-focused clinicians may feel unprepared to diagnose and treat schizophrenia in young clients. This chapter reviews what is known about the epidemiology, course, and causes of schizophrenia, as well as best practices for assessment and treatment. Interventions with strong empirical support for effectiveness among adults with schizophrenia include antipsychotic medication, team-based community care, psychoeducation, rehabilitative services, and cognitive behavior therapy. The chapter provides an overview of these treatment components and suggestions for adapting these to fit the needs of adolescent clients. Promising strategies such as cognitive enhancement and early intervention are also highlighted.
