Abstract
The number of injuries in female athletes has increased over the past several decades, partly due to the growing participation of women in sports, but also because of an increased susceptibility to foot and ankle injuries when compared to male athletes. Physiologic factors, such as greater ligamentous laxity, anatomic differences, or the female athlete triad, may play a role in injury for female athletes. In addition, participation in specific sports increases the risk of certain types of injuries. Injury prevention for the female athlete requires a multifocal approach and can make a difference in rate of injury and speed of recovery for the athlete.
