Abstract
In spite of its undoubted popularity, very little work appears to have been accomplished with the formal genetics of the dog. The heredity of coat colour has received considerable attention and a number of loci have been defined. However, there is controversy over the status of certain colour variations and recognition of several genes (Winge, 1950; Little, 1957; Burns and Fraser, 1966). A large number of abnormalities have been shown to be monogenically determined. The most comprehensive survey of canine genetics is that of Burns and Fraser (1966); while a remarkable compilation of breeding results is provided by Little (1957).
