Abstract

The domestic rabbit featured prominently in the early days of mammalian genetics but this popularity has waned in recent decades. This has reflected upon the rate of discovery of mutants for the species and upon the number of known linkage groups. Despite this, the rabbit still remains a useful research animal for a variety of topics. Some 45–50 mutant gene/loci have been reported, of which 34 have been employed in studies of independent assortment and linkage. A detailed collation of early work is presented by Robinson (1956).
