Brain Mitochondria

  • Chapter
Book cover Handbook of Neurochemistry

Abstract

The primary objective of this chapter is to present a discussion of the biochemical properties and function of mitochondria in the nervous system, not only in the light of specific investigations on brain mitochondria alone but against the background of extensive knowledge of mitochondria from other tissues. Although mitochondria from neural tissue have certain qualitative differences in their enzymic and chemical constitution from liver and heart muscle mitochondria, the major differences are quantitative. As more investigations are conducted on pure preparations of brain mitochondria, the similarities between mitochondria from brain and those from other tissues have become more apparent. The term “mitochondria” will be used as if it referred to organelles derived from a homogeneous cell population; however, because of the many different cell types in neural tissue with a variety of functions, it is, perhaps, naive to assume that the neural mitochondria are homogeneous in their biochemical and functional characteristics.
