Abstract

While the substitution of hydrogen with metals in certain hydrocarbons (acetylene1, phenylacetylene2, triphenylmethane3, diphenyl- methane4, cyclopentadiene5, fluorene6) has been a known reaction for 100 years, it was not until the turn of the century that ‘acidity’ was made responsible for this phenomenon. Unsuccessful attempts to determine an acid dissociation constant of acetylene in water date from the same time7. Later, chemists became familiar with the concept of CH-acidity mainly in connection with investigations of tautomeric equilibria. Around 1930, differences in acid strength of some acidic hydrocarbons were noticed8–10. A few years later Conant and Wheland 11 and McEwen 12 set up a semiquantitative pK-scale for a number of hydrocarbons. It is only in recent years that noticeable progress has been made concerning synthesis and more exact pK measurement of acidic hydrocarbons.
