Abstract
A long unbroken career in nursing does not appear to be a reality for large numbers of female nurses employed within the National Health Service and when you consider that the Scottish Health Service Statistics (Common Services Agency, 1988) indicate that over 90% of all nurses in the service are female, the phenomenon of career breaks must exert a significant effect on both the individual nurse and the service in general.
