Abstract
As we approach the last decade of the 20th century, nurses are faced with what would appear to be a bewildering array of career pathways. The decision about which route to take depends on a number of factors, not least experience. However, even newly registered nurses would be advised to think carefully about their future and according to Baker (1988) ‘it is never too early to start to plan’. If experience has been gained in a haphazard way without planning it is advisable, and not too late, to take a long hard look at career and prospects. If you are returning to the profession after a break or seeking to change direction, you should also find a suitable avenue which will meet your needs.
