Abstract

This chapter describes the need for dietary energy, its units of measurement, requirements and factors determining them and appetite control. Obesity, its definition, measurement and treatment, illustrated with some case studies, are discussed along with its metabolic effects. Starvation, anorexia nervosa and bulimia are covered briefly. Advice on food choice, with the energy values of some common foods, is given.
