Abstract

A simple example is used in this demonstration version to illustrate the various methods. Figure 1 shows a map of an imaginary region in the south-west of the Netherlands. The road through the centre of the region connecting the north with the industrial port of Nyverhoeck has insufficient capacity; as a result frequent traffic jams occur. To improve this situation three alternatives are suggested:

• — A four-lane highway to the west and parallel to the existing road, following the coastline;

• — The same but divided into two lanes for private and two lanes for public transport;

• — A train link entering the region from the northwest, passing through the middle of the region, and ending at Nyverhoeck.
